Description: L700 x W190mm

Small shield used as a toy by children and collected from Cape Grafton in 1900. Miniature weapons were made for boys by older male relatives or friends similar to the larger shields used by initiated adult men. Red, black and white natural pigments on wood.

Walter Roth sold his collection of nearly 2000 North Queensland artefacts to the Australian Museum in 1905 for £450 (Barnard 2014).
