Walter Edmund Roth was appointed as a Protector of Aborigines in 1898 and had opportunity to collect artefacts. See: http://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/roth-walter-edmund-8280
Roth stated that these kidney shaped shields were not made much by 1898, and if so, were only made by very old men. Red, yellow, black and white natural pigments.
Walter Roth sold his collection of nearly 2000 North Queensland artefacts to the Australian Museum in 1905 for £450 (Barnard 2014).
